Elk Cottage is a 4 Star Gold Award winning restoration of a Grade II listed traditional sandstone barn located in the quiet hamlet of Glassonby in the middle of the Eden Vally. Access to the rolling hills of the Eden Valley and its numerous nearby walks is one of the best features of this cosy cottage.
The recent renovation of Elk Cottage, Jenny's Croft and Glassonby Old Hall dating back to the 1600s, bring these 4 and 5 Star Gold Award winning barns and traditional Cumbrian long house back into habitation for the first time since 1764. They retain many of their original features including old ship timber oak beams, oak mullion windows, flagged stone floors, open fireplaces, stone staircases, stone walls, arched openings, original old fashioned door heights (some low) and terraced gardens and fields. All three properties are furnished throughout with antiques and incorporate solar water heating.
Though Elk Cottage is no longer part of a working farm, its position on one of the higher hills in the Eden Valley gives its gardens amazing views towards the Pennines and the rolling countryside that has seen this area in Cumbria declared one of the UK's designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Elk Cottage is dog friendly and the gardens and grounds surrounding this cottage provide plenty of room for running around.
There are some great walks starting from the front door of Elk Cottage including a walk along from Dale Raven along the banks of the River Eden, a walk to Lacey's Caves along the Eden River, a walk to the Long Meg Stone Circle (the second largest in England) and to the charming nearby Cumbrian village of Melmerby, where the nationally acclaimed organic Village Bakery and the Shepherd's Inn Pub provide great food and local beers (Dorris' 90th Birthday ale is highly recommended).
There is a village shop 1.5 miles from Glassonby in Kirkoswald which also has two local pubs. Bicycles, locks and helmets are available for hire on site. Cycling route maps provided and Glassonby is located along the popular C2C cycle route as well as having many quiet lanes in the local area which are ideal for cyclists.

The secluded grounds of the family owned Grade 1 listed Blencowe Hall estate contain these three Grade 2 listed cottages which have been sensitively renovated to a high standard.
In addition to its own private garden, parking and seating areas around the property, also contained within the grounds of Blencowe Hall is a tributary of the River Petterill which has brown trout fishing. Other outdoor pursuits can easily be arranged including salmon fishing, clay pigeon shooting, pony trekking, sailboat hire and cycle tours along the popular C2C cycle route which passes through the village. The fantastic views over the Lakeland Hills and peaceful setting make these cottages ideal for walkers or guests seeking a "get away from it all" location from which they can enjoy the Lake District without being overrun by other visitors. The three properties here Cazenovia Hall, Riverain and Wythburn Cottages are less than four miles from the Lake District National Park.
Blencowe is easily accessible from the Penrith train station (three hours direct from Euston) and a 10 minute taxi ride. It is about four miles from Junction 40 of the M6. Other popular local attractions include Hutton in the Forest and its extensive grounds which are just a few miles away, Lowther Castle, and one of Alfred Wainwright's favourite walks in the Lake District which winds along just above the shores of Ullswater and forms a fantastic loop journey with a leg back along the famous Ullswater Steamers.
A stunning conversion of a coach house dating back to the 1700s gives Riverain its welcoming double height oak floored reception room with floor to ceiling arched windows. The massive sandstone fireplace is a focal point for cool Cumbrian evenings and a generous supply of logs as well as underfloor heating ensures guest comfort and relaxation. Accommodation overview: Waitby School was built on Waitby Fell in 1680 by James Highmore, a local to the area, for the children of Waitby and Smardale. About a mile and a half west of Kirkby Stephen, Waitby is said to have been an ancient market town, with a castle, chapel and cemetery, but no trace of either is now to be seen. However, the school remains, standing proud on the fellside and, having been purchased recently by another local family, has been lovingly restored, in conjunction with English Heritage, to offer luxurious holiday accommodation. The property stands alone and enjoys uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside, dotted with livestock and the occasional farmer and tractor at doin up time.
